Kinja'd!!!

I had the pleasure of driving behind a 930 this morning. It was a brown car with slant nose kit, and sounded burbly and awesome.

The noise those things make is beautiful.

I’ve only ever seen one slant-nose 930 in the wild and it sounded like a thousand gnomes with those Japanese drums in a strong wind:

that...is a fairly accurate description.

Do you think the one in the picture is a factory conversion? They used to have louvres behind the headlight pods to prevent front end lift (by alleviating the air pressure under the front of the car). Although with Porsche’s typical option schemes... maybe those cost extra.

Running boards and rear brake ventilation intakes seem to be correct though.

I’ve never been a fan of the Flachbau style, I admit. But Mansour Ojjeh’s “almost 935" was interesting, even though it was way over the top.

Well now I’ve heard it both ways - that the early Sonderwunsch cars had no louvers behind the lights, and then again that all the factory flachbau cars had the louvers. More than likely it’s an early non-louver kit from AJ racing.

It seems we both may be right. See this website (in German):

http://www.turbosition.com/de/exklusiv/93…

The louvres had to be ordered separately, but they may not have been available at first. Also in the beginning Porsche started doing the Flachbau style on already built, customer-supplied cars, and only later offered it as an option on brand new cars.

Even more interestingly, in the early years Porsche offered the option of having the headlamps on the front air dam (à la early 935) instead of the retracting units. I thought only DP kits were that way.

I think running boards and and rear brake intakes with strakes were not available at first, so as you say the chances of it being a factory conversion/order option are pretty slim.

After checking the truly stratospheric prices (!) of the different bits of the package methinks ordering the lot without adding the louvres would be a bit silly, because they positively enhance the behaviour of the car at very high speeds. But some people are weird so who knows.

I personally like the non-louvered look, and these things were already twice the price of a 930 from the factory so I would be looking to save as much money as possible while ordering one.
